Gambier Island
Captain George Vancouver was the first European to sail the waters of Howe Sound in 1792. Almost 100 years later the first hydrographic survey was conducted by HMS Plumper and at that time GAMBIER ISLAND was named after British admiral Lord James Gambier. The largest south facing bays were named by early settlers; West Bay, Center Bay and Long Bay.
Gambier Island is the largest of four How Sound islands - approximately 25 square miles. Although there is about 120 permanent residents the summer population grows to approximately 1000. Parts of the island are serviced by hydro, telephone and high speed internet. Gambier is a "boat access only" island with BC Ferries service to Langdale / New Brighton. This service is provided by private boat "Stormaway II" under contract to BC Ferries. There is also scheduled and unscheduled passenger service (as well as barge service) by private water taxi operators from Horseshoe Bay and Gibsons.
Gambier Island is perfect location for recreational and retirement properties. Recreational opportunities are endless; swimming, boating, fishing, nature hikes, nature observation, community events for all ages and interests.
